At ICAN, Social Work is More Than a Career. It is a Calling.
Social work is a field that demands compassion, creativity and resilience. It asks its practitioners to see the best in people even when circumstances make that difficult. And it is a field where the right support at the right moment can truly change the course of someone's life.
This month, we are proud to shine a light on some of the remarkable social workers who make ICAN's mission of keeping families together a reality each and every day. In their own words, they share what drew them to this work and what keeps them coming back. We think their answers will inspire you.

Why am I passionate about Social Work?
My enthusiasm for social work ignited during my elementary school years. There's a unique satisfaction in realizing that you can drive change every single day. As a social worker, the possibilities are endless. You have the power to unleash your creativity, designing incredible clinical groups, organizing engaging events, and devising innovative solutions to challenges. Collaboration is key, and you can thrive in any environment you choose. Clients and students appreciate your reliability, and that consistent support truly makes a significant impact.
What brought me to ICAN as a Social Worker?
I discovered ICAN nine years ago, and my friends raved about how wonderful it was as a workplace. They were right; it has been a fantastic experience. I've had the opportunity to advance within the organization and have been acknowledged for my achievements. The freedom to generate ideas and engage in exciting events is invigorating. I appreciate the flexibility to work on a micro level with individuals or take a macro approach within the community. I am not confined to a specific role, and that’s what keeps me motivated to stay at ICAN.

Why am I passionate about Social Work?
For me, the answer evolves over time. The reason I got into Social Work isn't the reason I stay in the field. I stay in the field because I know everyone needs someone who believes in them. We wouldn't be doing the work we do if we didn't believe people can change, adapt, overcome, or evolve. I believe in my staff, and I believe in the families we work with. I have been in the field for 23 years. The staff and families who are successful had someone who believed in them and believed in themselves. When someone believes in you, it fosters hope. And hope can sometimes be the first building block for a better future.
What brought me to ICAN as a Social Worker?
Initially, there was a person who I have known for a long time, who believed in me and gave me a chance. That was my building block for my future here, but that's not why I stay. I stay because, as a Social Worker, I have been given incredible opportunities for my professional growth, which makes me a better Social Worker, and eventually gives back to my community through some front-line work, coaching and teaching staff. This is a tough career with a high burn out rate. I stay a Social Worker because of the environment we create here because it fosters growth, balance, and many opportunities for finding your purpose.
Now go find someone you believe in and tell them. You will be amazed with what they do with that.

I am passionate about social work because I love being able to support students and clients as they grow and navigate challenges. Why are you passionate about social work?
I am passionate about social work because I care about helping people feel better and find meaningful and long-lasting solutions to the challenges they face daily. I am in people's homes, which gives me a deeper understanding of what they go through and the factors that contribute to their challenges. This also allows me to focus not only on problem-solving but also on building trust and empathy between us, which leads to long-lasting positive change. I see individuals who are trying their best. Many are fighting daily battles and still pushing forward to create a better life for themselves, their families, and their communities. Being able to support that strength and resilience is what makes this work so meaningful to me.
What brought you to ICAN as a social worker?
I started as an Adult Care Manager at ICAN, where I gained experience that allows me to be more than a mental health therapist to my clients. I learned to navigate community services and to connect people with the resources they need. This agency also supports me both professionally and personally, which means a lot to me. What stands out most is how much ICAN shows up for people. You can see it in the wide range of programs offered and in the agency's continued growth to meet the needs of our community.
